What to Do When Your Roof Starts Leaking

You notice a brown stain spreading across the ceiling, or worse, water actively dripping into your home. A roof leak is stressful, but acting quickly and methodically can minimize the damage and cost.

Immediate Steps

1. Contain the water — Place buckets, pots, or towels under active drips. If the ceiling is bulging, carefully poke a small hole in the center of the bulge to let water drain into a container rather than letting it spread and collapse a larger section.
2. Move belongings — Get furniture, electronics, and valuables away from the affected area. Even if the leak seems small, water can travel along rafters and appear far from the actual entry point.
3. Document everything — Take photos and video of the leak, the ceiling damage, and any affected belongings. This documentation is critical for insurance claims.
4. Check the attic — If you can safely access your attic, look for the source. Water stains, mold, or daylight coming through the roof deck will help pinpoint the entry point.

Temporary Tarping

If you can identify the general area on the exterior and conditions are safe, a tarp can prevent further water entry until a professional arrives:

• Use a heavy-duty tarp that extends at least 4 feet beyond the damaged area on all sides
• Secure it with 2x4 boards or weighted sandbags — never nail through the tarp into the roof
• Drape the tarp over the ridge if possible so water flows over it, not under it
